Kite Making Workshops

Everyone has to start somewhere, so let's start with making a kite.  Our kite-making workshops are designed to fit a wide range of age groups, suited for public and private schools, as well as after-school programs and camps.  Kites are a great way to combine several curricula into one fun activity, Kite Making, which incorporates creative and technical thinking; Art, Science, Mathematics, Geometry, Health, and even History.

FAQs

At this age, fine motor skills are still developing. They struggle with complex knots and precise measurements.

  • Kite Style: Simple Sled kites or "Frustrationless" plastic bag kites.
  • Focus: Decoration and the "magic" of lift. Use pre-cut materials and tape instead of glue.
  • Ratio: These groups require the most adult supervision to help with bridle attachments.

Great when paired with an indoor or outdoor professional kite flying demonstration and show-and-tell. This serves to inspire them about the possibilities and creates more interest in what is possible, fostering participation.

This is the "sweet spot" for school workshops. These students can follow multi-step instructions and handle basic tools.

  • Kite Style: Classic Diamonds (Eddy kites) or simple Delta kites.
  • Focus: Basic aerodynamics (the spine, the crossbar, and the tail).
  • Activity: They can measure their own spars and experiment with how tail length affects stability.

Middle schoolers generally want something that looks "pro" and performs well. They can handle more tensioned structures.

  • Kite Style: Box kites, tetrahedral kites, or more advanced high-aspect Deltas.
  • Focus: Physics and geometry. This is a great time to discuss dihedral angles and wind windows.
  • Activity: Give them more autonomy over the design—letting them choose where to place stabilizers or how to adjust the bridle for different wind speeds.
  • Each lesson typically lasts for about 2 hours. Subject to the wind and the weather.
  • This can be spread over the course of a 2-3 days with the final day being the day to launch the kite.

Despite popular belief, the best time to fly kites is not on the super windy days, but when the wind is moderate, and some even prefer low wind as you become more skilled.  Ideally, wind conditions are typically 5-8 mph for kite flying workshops, and Zero Wind for indoor kite flying.  Serious kite flyers have dozens of kites to fit different wind conditions, allowing for flexibility to have fun year-round.  Just avoid lightning and thunderstorms, Ben Franklin & Tesla already discovered electricity.

We also offer private one on one kite flying, stunt kite, sport kite and power kiting lessons as well as corporate workshops for adults, and family fun days.  Call us about your idea and we will see what we can do.
